Unlike other countries,  there are few regulations and laws in India to protect credit card holders against fraud. Online fraud is through phishing and can be avoided if the credit card users takes suitable precautions.

Offline credit card /debit card fraud seems to be more common and there is a little a card holder can do, except hope that the shop , restaurant or hotel has honest employees or pay by cash. Credit card frauds have a limited liability, but since debit card payments are directly debited to your account, there is no limit.

The fraudsters recruit employees in shops and establishments where credit and debit cards are used for payment. These employees are given a skimmer which is a small device which can scan and copy the encrypted information on the magnetic strip of  the credit card. When a credit card user makes a purchase at the shop, the card details are stored on the skimmer.

These details are copied on to a counterfeit card, which are then used by the fraudster to make purchases. The credit card owner remains unaware of this , until he receives a bill for purchases he never made.
